Rye is quickly becoming a foodie heaven, the local scallops have been branded – Rye Bay Scallops, and a festival has been created to honour our local catch!

We do suggest that you arrange an online delivery that can take the stress and meet you on your day of arrival, all major supermarkets deliver to Camber.

Rye boasts a wonderful fresh fish shop, butcher, cheese shop, and green grocer. On Wednesday it hosts a growing Rye Farmer’s market.

Eating out?  You’ll be spoilt for choice from fresh fish and chips, to the boutique hotel heaven of The George hotel in Rye, or the laid-back shabby chic charm of The Ship Inn. A five minute walk from the properties finds you in the award-winning, The Gallivant, which offers excellent family-friendly lunches & dinners.

Our local and friendly, Salt Farm Shop is open every day, selling illy coffee takeaways, local meat and vegetables and other deli finds, with a few foodie indulgencies and for those who really cannot be bothered to cook – ‘Cook’ meals.

The village shop in Camber provides the basics along with a post office and papers.   Award winning local butcher and Rick Stein hero, Jamie Wickens, can usually be found behind the meat counter at The Ship Winchelsea Beach – a local character offering superb meat and deli goodies in ‘The Ships Store’ or stay and have a meal in their bar – then take in Winchelsea Beach.

IN AND AROUND RYE:

The Gallivant – (as above) within walking distance from all our houses – recently refurbed, a perfect retreat from a day on the beach!

The George Hotel  Stylish boutique hotel, lunch in the courtyard, a pint at the bar or relax in the restaurant and then pick up anything you fancied in the hotel at their ‘shop next door’…

The Globe Inn Marsh, on the Military Road this new pub is offering fab food in serious style – the quirky interiors sometimes distract from the food, but their sharing ribs are delicious! 

The Standard Inn – in the heart of the citadel – a new and fabulous welcome addition to the foodie trail, serving great nosh and good local beer in unpretentious surroundings.

The Tuscan Kitchen, a family run, fabulous Italian restaurant offering tasty regional dishes run by the gorgeous Jen and Franco.

For meat lovers try the Union Steakhouse in the citadel of Rye, or their sister pub, the Plough, five minutes out of Rye.

If you like flowers and cake..  Cafe des Fleurs at the station and serves coffee, cake amongst seasonal blooms – heaven.

The Ship Inn, outdoor garden wonderfully landscaped, The Bistro and Ship’s Store for all your meat and deli bits in Winchelsea Beach – a must for stocking up.

A LITTLE FURTHER AFIELD

Our favourite foodie bite is to be found at the wonderful Dungeness Fish Hut Snack Shack, family run by Kelly, next to her father’s fish shop (fantastic) she cooks the fish he has just caught – tasty lobster & crab rolls (when in season) or the best fish finger sandwiches you will have ever eaten!  Homemade flatbreads with crunchy slaw,  to good a place to keep secret but the place you never want to share….  check for opening times.

The Swan @ Chapel Down – fabulous restaurant amongst the award winning vines of Chapel Down – English wine and English food at its best!  Near Tenterden – a special treat

On the way to Bodiam Castle (or way back!) The White Dog a pub perfect for a drink with amazing views of Bodiam Castle and fabulous food, Dale the head chef departed to here from Camber!

The Ferry Inn, 17th century pub in the middle of nowhere, selling good beer and food.  The quintessential English pub.

The Plough just outside Rye on the road to Battle has now taken root in Rye too – visit the Union Steakhouse for the tasty basics.

If you are a true foodie and don’t mind a little drive, take in trip to the north shore – to Seasalter nr Whitstable, perhaps via Canterbury to  The Sportsman, probably the best food in the south east – a Michelin starred pub offering something truly special in a relaxed environment – worth the one hours drive…. HEAVEN…
