Drifting from the sands of Camber (where it all started), we found ourselves adding a couple of other properties that took our fancy. As one of Europe’s best preserved medieval hilltop towns, Rye is steeped in maritime history, smuggling references can be found throughout the picture postcard town. A labyrinth of cobbled streets showcasing an array of doorways that lead to a variety of independent shops, fabulous eateries and boozy boltholes, that are bound to wet the appetite of any traveller.
It is the ideal place to base yourself and explore the area on foot. Its creative, cultural and literary references are vast and given the rich cultural history that surrounds this area you won’t be disappointed for something to see and do. Wrest Cottage & Chandlers Cabin have river frontage and you can while away many hours watching the ebb and flow of the tide. In the shadow of the castle ramparts you can walk into town in a matter of minutes. In the heart of Rye we have Ockman House a large and imposing property with panoramic views across the marsh. The Playhouse, a romantic bolthole for two set back off the high street in one of the most stunning historic buildings in town.
Just two hours drive from central London; or 38 minutes to Ashford International from St. Pancras and then change trains for Rye (23 mins) it is easily accessible for those who want to come on foot. Hire bikes and take the scenic tour.
Winding your way along the coast towards Hastings, finds Winchelsea Beach and Pett Level where we have another two properties Cloudbreak, (sister house to The Blue House in Camber) and Cliff End Fort both offering a truly luxurious stay. Sandwiched between Firehills, the Hastings Country Park and Rye Nature Reserve, you will have a tough time deciding which way to go.
